India's Poultry Industry
How chicken quietly became one of India's largest and fastest-growing protein industries
Imagine an industry that grew from a comparatively small, unorganised backyard activity into a genuinely large, increasingly integrated commercial sector, chicken meat and eggs, without the same level of headline policy attention that crops like wheat, rice or cotton receive, despite India's poultry market now being valued at $30.46 billion in 2025 and projected to more than double to $66.37 billion by 2034.
This growth reflects genuine dietary and income shifts across India, rising incomes have increased demand for animal protein, and chicken specifically benefits from being more affordable and culturally acceptable across a broader range of Indian consumers than other meat categories, a demand tailwind that has sustained the industry's growth through multiple broader economic cycles.
The industry has organised considerably over recent decades, integrated poultry companies increasingly control the full chain, breeding, feed production, contract farming with individual growers, processing and distribution, a structure genuinely similar to the contract farming model covered elsewhere on this site, letting large companies coordinate production quality and volume while individual farmers handle the actual bird-rearing under contracted terms.
Poultry's growth trajectory offers a genuinely useful contrast to the crop-focused agricultural policy apparatus, MSP, buffer stocks, NFSA, all covered elsewhere on this site, built almost entirely around foodgrain, poultry has grown substantially through private commercial investment and organised supply chains with comparatively less direct government price support, showing that not every fast-growing segment of Indian agribusiness depends on the same policy support mechanisms that shaped the foodgrain sector's development.
