Aeroderivative Turbines

Why data centres are increasingly powered by machines derived from jet engines rather than heavy industrial turbines

Imagine taking the engine off a commercial airliner, largely unchanged in principle, mounting it on a trailer with a generator attached, and using it to power a small town within weeks of arriving on site, rather than joining a years-long factory order queue. That is essentially what an aeroderivative gas turbine is, a jet-engine-derived design, lighter and more compact than the heavy industrial-frame gas turbines covered elsewhere on this site, built for fast starts and easy transport rather than the largest possible single-unit output.

GE Vernova's LM6000, the most widely deployed aeroderivative in this class, can reach full output within minutes, with a rated five-minute fast start, has been sold in more than 1,500 units, and has accumulated roughly 60 million cumulative operating hours with a start reliability above 99%, a track record that matters enormously to a data centre operator who needs backup or primary power to actually work every single time it is called on, not just on paper.

That combination of speed and reliability is exactly why aeroderivative turbines have moved from a niche backup role to a central part of AI data centre power strategy, a large Stargate-linked project, for instance, was supplied with 29 stackable aeroderivative units capable of nearly 1 GW combined, and in a few reported cases developers have gone as far as repurposing decommissioned commercial aircraft engines directly, generating up to roughly 48 MW apiece, as a stopgap measure while waiting out the broader heavy-turbine backlog covered elsewhere on this site.

The underlying trade-off is size for speed, a single heavy industrial-frame turbine can output far more power than one aeroderivative unit, but a data campus can be sited, permitted and running on a bank of aeroderivative turbines in weeks to months rather than the years a heavy-frame turbine order or a full grid interconnection currently takes, which is precisely the calculation showing up in how quickly some of the newest AI campuses have managed to switch on at all.
