Large Panelboards

The fuse box, scaled from a household to a hyperscale campus

AI & Data Centres·intermediate·1 min read·Updated September 2026

Imagine a household's fuse box, then imagine one engineered not to distribute a few kilowatts across a handful of household circuits, but to distribute tens of megawatts across hundreds of individually protected server-rack circuits inside a single facility. A panelboard is the distribution board that sits downstream of switchgear and busway, both covered elsewhere on this site, and its job is to break bulk incoming power down into individual, breaker-protected circuits actually feeding equipment.

"Large" in a data centre context means panelboards engineered for far higher current ratings and a far greater density of individual circuits than a typical office or commercial building would ever require, reflecting how much more electrically dense a hyperscale facility is compared with almost any other kind of building.

Panelboards sit at the tail end of the same electrical equipment supply chain already squeezed by the large transformers and switchgear covered elsewhere on this site, and while any single panelboard costs far less than a transformer, a large campus orders them in far greater volume, so even a modest shortfall or delay in panelboard supply can multiply quickly across a project with hundreds of racks, part of why the overall electrical equipment market serving data centres is projected to roughly triple, from around $20 billion in 2026 toward $65 billion by 2030.
