The Universal ABS Mandate

Imagine a safety feature, Anti-lock Braking System, ABS, that prevents wheels from locking up during hard braking, dramatically reducing skidding and improving control in emergency stops, being mandatory only on the more expensive, larger-engine motorcycles above 125cc, while the vast majority of everyday scooters and entry-level motorcycles, exactly the vehicles most commonly involved in everyday traffic accidents, remained legally allowed to skip it entirely. The cost impact is real but modest per unit, roughly Rs 3,000 per vehicle, translating to a 3% to 5% price increase on affected models, a genuinely meaningful jump for manufacturers competing hardest at the entry-level, price-sensitive end of the market, where even small price increases can measurably affect sales volume among cost-conscious rural and first-time buyers covered elsewhere on this site.
