The World's First CNG Motorcycle

Imagine a motorcycle running on the same compressed natural gas that fuels city buses and, in many Indian households, kitchen stoves, rather than petrol, with a simple switch letting the rider toggle between CNG and petrol depending on which fuel is more available or affordable at any given moment. The Bajaj Freedom 125, which Bajaj describes as the world's first mass-production CNG motorcycle, entered production in 2024 as exactly this dual-fuel vehicle.

The economic case is genuinely compelling for cost-conscious riders, CNG runs meaningfully cheaper per kilometre than petrol in most Indian cities with CNG infrastructure, and unlike the electric two-wheelers covered elsewhere on this site, a CNG motorcycle doesn't require the rider to change their refuelling habits or wait for a charge, refuelling at a CNG station takes roughly the same time as a petrol fill-up, addressing the range anxiety and charging time concerns that still constrain some EV buyers.

This dual-fuel flexibility matters directly for riders in cities where CNG station infrastructure remains genuinely uneven, the ability to switch back to petrol when CNG isn't conveniently available removes the single-fuel dependency risk that would otherwise make a CNG-only motorcycle impractical outside cities with dense, reliable CNG refuelling networks.

Bajaj's CNG motorcycle represents a genuinely different bet on India's two-wheeler fuel future than the electric-first strategy most manufacturers, including Bajaj itself in its own scooter lineup, are pursuing simultaneously, rather than assuming battery electric vehicles are the only viable alternative to petrol, this product treats CNG as a parallel, complementary alternative fuel pathway, particularly relevant in cities where CNG infrastructure, built up over years for cars and auto-rickshaws, already exists and simply needed a two-wheeler product to take advantage of it.
