Imagine a government incentive designed not to reward a company for making what it already knows how to make cheaply, but specifically to reward it for building capability in the newer, more technically demanding products the industry is only just shifting toward. The PLI scheme for automotive and auto components does exactly this, deliberately targeting Advanced Automotive Technology rather than conventional vehicle and component manufacturing.

PLI Auto, carrying an outlay of Rs 25,938 crore, offers financial incentives tied to incremental sales of Advanced Automotive Technology products, EVs, hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, and the sophisticated components underlying them, electronic control units, sensors and battery-related components among them, rather than simply subsidising higher volumes of conventional internal combustion vehicles India's component industry already produces at scale.

This targeted structure reflects a specific strategic bet: rather than trying to compete with established, lower-cost conventional component manufacturers globally, India's auto component industry has a genuine opportunity to build capability in the newer technology categories the entire global industry is simultaneously shifting toward, where no country yet holds the decades of accumulated manufacturing experience conventional components carry.

Two-wheeler manufacturers and component suppliers, alongside four-wheeler and commercial vehicle players, are eligible under the scheme, meaning PLI Auto sits alongside the more EV-specific incentives already covered here, FAME, PM E-DRIVE, ACC PLI, as one more layer of the broader policy push to build India's electric and advanced automotive manufacturing capability across every vehicle category simultaneously.

Whenever an Indian auto component maker announces a new investment specifically in electronic control units, EV motors or other clearly advanced-technology components, rather than expanding conventional part manufacturing, PLI Auto incentives are very often part of the financial calculation behind that specific strategic shift, the scheme doing exactly what it was designed to do.
