Codeshare Agreements
Why a single flight can be sold under two different airline names at once
Imagine booking a flight from Delhi to New York on a familiar Indian airline's website, only to discover on the day of travel that the actual aircraft and crew belong to a completely different, foreign airline, with your original airline's name appearing only on your ticket and boarding pass. That's precisely a codeshare agreement, one airline physically operates the flight while one or more partner airlines sell seats on it under their own separate flight number.
The commercial logic is straightforward, an Indian carrier without its own long-haul route to a specific city can still sell tickets to that destination by codesharing with a foreign partner that already flies there, extending its effective network far beyond the routes it physically operates itself, while the operating airline gains access to the partner's customer base and distribution channels without adding a single additional flight.
Codeshare partnerships often sit within larger airline alliances, global networks of partner carriers that coordinate scheduling, loyalty programme benefits and baggage handling across each other's flights, letting a passenger book what feels like a single seamless journey across multiple airlines and countries, even though several genuinely separate companies are involved in actually delivering that journey.
For Indian carriers specifically, codesharing has been a genuinely useful way to offer international connectivity without needing the widebody aircraft and long-haul route rights every single destination would otherwise require, though as India's own aircraft order books, covered elsewhere on this site, bring in more widebody capacity, expect Indian carriers to gradually convert some of these codeshare routes into flights they operate themselves, capturing more of the revenue and customer relationship directly rather than sharing it with a partner airline.
