AAC Blocks: The Cement Industry's Own Competitor
Why the same cement companies pushing traditional concrete are also racing into a lightweight alternative that uses less of it
Imagine a building material, Autoclaved Aerated Concrete, AAC, blocks, made from a mixture including cement but processed with an aeration agent and cured under high-pressure steam, producing a genuinely lightweight, porous block with better thermal insulation than conventional concrete blocks, and using considerably less raw cement per unit volume than the traditional masonry it's increasingly replacing, meaning AAC's growth represents a genuine, if modest, headwind to conventional cement volume even as major cement companies themselves increasingly manufacture it.
AAC's practical advantages are genuinely significant for construction, its light weight reduces structural load and transportation cost, its porous structure provides better thermal insulation than solid concrete blocks, reducing a building's cooling energy needs, and blocks can be manufactured to precise dimensions, speeding up construction compared to traditional brick-by-brick masonry.
India's AAC market has grown into genuine scale, valued at $4.0 billion in 2025, projected to more than double to $9.1 billion by 2034, driven specifically by rapid urbanisation, affordable housing initiatives covered under PMAY elsewhere on this site, and growing demand for energy-efficient building materials, with India specifically expected to post the highest AAC growth rate globally.
Major cement companies' own embrace of AAC, JK Lakshmi Cement's involvement in the Indian Green Building Council's 'AAC-First' initiative launched in May 2025, specifically incentivising developers using over 75% AAC in affordable housing projects, illustrates a genuinely pragmatic strategic response, rather than treating AAC purely as a competitive threat to conventional cement and block sales, established cement producers are positioning themselves to capture this growing segment directly, hedging their own business against the exact substitution trend AAC represents.
