MOP: Muriate of Potash
The one major fertiliser nutrient India has almost none of underground
Imagine a country that can grow every ingredient for a national dish except one spice, which simply does not exist anywhere within its own soil, no matter how hard anyone looks. That is India's relationship with potassium, the third of the three primary crop nutrients alongside nitrogen and phosphorus, and Muriate of Potash, or MOP, is the fertiliser form India relies on almost entirely from abroad.
Unlike nitrogen, which can be synthesised industrially, or phosphorus, where India has some domestic rock phosphate, exploitable potash reserves are geologically concentrated in a small number of countries, principally Canada, Russia, Belarus, and a few others, and India has essentially none of its own. As a result, close to 100% of the MOP used in India is imported, making it the single most import-dependent of the three primary fertiliser nutrients.
This total reliance on imports makes MOP supply a genuine strategic vulnerability rather than just a commercial one. When Belarus faced international sanctions after 2021, and global potash logistics were further disrupted, India had to actively renegotiate long-term supply contracts and diversify sourcing to countries like Canada and Israel to keep potash flowing.
The global potash market itself is substantial, valued at roughly $66.6 billion in 2025 and still growing, which gives India real weight as a buyer even without any domestic production of its own, since it remains one of the largest single importers of potash in the world.
Whenever fertiliser subsidy or supply discussions single out potassium specifically, rather than nitrogen or phosphorus, MOP's near-total import dependency is almost always the underlying reason, since it is the one nutrient India has no realistic path to producing domestically.
