Speciality Chemicals

Imagine two bakeries, one churning out plain white bread by the truckload at razor thin margins, the other making a handful of elaborate custom wedding cakes each earning a far higher margin per unit sold. Speciality chemicals are the wedding cake business of the chemicals industry.

Speciality chemicals are high value, differentiated products made in relatively small volumes for very specific applications, agrochemicals, dyes, pigments, personal care ingredients and performance additives among them, in contrast to bulk commodity chemicals produced at massive uniform scale with comparatively thin, cyclical margins. Because speciality products are often custom formulated for a particular customer's needs, they tend to carry longer relationships, higher margins and less commodity like price volatility than bulk chemicals.

India's speciality chemicals sector has grown rapidly as global companies diversify their chemical supply chains away from overdependence on China, a shift similar in spirit to what has benefited Indian pharma CDMOs, giving Indian speciality chemical manufacturers an expanding role as trusted, quality certified suppliers to global customers rather than pure low cost bulk producers.
