Contract Manufacturing
The umbrella term that covers EMS, OEM and ODM all at once
Imagine a broad category label that covers every possible arrangement where one company makes a product on behalf of another company that owns the brand, regardless of exactly how much design input the manufacturer contributed. Contract manufacturing is that broad umbrella term, sitting above the more specific labels EMS, OEM and ODM.
Under contract manufacturing, a brand owner outsources the actual physical production of a good to a specialised manufacturer, ranging from pure assembly work with zero design input, closer to classic EMS, all the way to full design and manufacture handled entirely by the contract partner, closer to ODM. The term is used broadly across industries, electronics, pharmaceuticals, food and personal care all rely heavily on contract manufacturing arrangements of varying sophistication.
When evaluating a contract manufacturing business as an investor, the single most important question is almost always where on this spectrum a company actually sits, since a pure assembly contract manufacturer and a design owning ODM look like the same kind of business on the surface but carry dramatically different margin profiles underneath.
