Geographical Area
The specific patch of India a gas company is licensed to serve
Imagine a city divided into zones, each zone auctioned off to exactly one gas distribution company for a fixed period, with the winner owning the sole right to lay pipes and sell gas within that specific zone. That zone is what the industry calls a Geographical Area, or GA, the basic administrative unit around which India's entire City Gas Distribution business is organised.
A Geographical Area can be a single city, a district, or sometimes several districts clubbed together, and PNGRB defines and auctions these units in successive bidding rounds. A company's CGD business is essentially the sum of all the Geographical Areas it has won, which is why a CGD company's investor presentation almost always opens with a map showing exactly how many GAs it operates and how much of India's population and geography that represents.
Winning a new Geographical Area is the CGD equivalent of a retailer opening in a new city, a fresh, multi year growth opportunity rather than simply defending an existing patch.
