Seismic Survey
How companies see underground without actually digging
Imagine tapping a wall gently and listening carefully to how the sound echoes back, using that echo to guess whether there is a hollow space, a pipe, or solid brick behind it. A seismic survey works on the same principle, just underground and at a vastly larger scale.
Specialised equipment sends sound waves into the earth, and sensors record how those waves bounce back off different underground rock layers, allowing geologists to build a detailed picture of subsurface structures without drilling a single well. Surveys are typically run as 2D, giving a rough cross sectional view, or the more detailed and expensive 3D, which builds a full three dimensional map of the geology, and are used both to decide where to nominate open acreage and to plan exactly where an exploratory well should be drilled.
A block with strong, promising seismic data typically attracts more aggressive bidding in an OALP or DSF round, since seismic survey results are usually the single biggest factor shaping a company's confidence before it commits capital to actual drilling.
