Imagine a stack of old newspapers, magazines and used office paper, covered with printed ink, and needing to genuinely transform that waste paper back into clean, usable pulp fibre capable of being made into new paper, a process that has to remove essentially all that ink without destroying the paper fibres themselves in the process. Deinking is exactly this specialised industrial process, and it's the specific technical step that makes India's roughly 72% recycled-fibre paper production, covered elsewhere on this site, actually possible.

The process typically works by first pulping the waste paper in water to break it back down into a fibre slurry, then using a combination of chemicals, surfactants that help separate ink particles from fibre, and mechanical processes, flotation cells that use air bubbles to lift ink particles away from the fibre suspension, together stripping out the ink while preserving as much usable fibre length and strength as possible.

Deinking quality directly determines what the recovered fibre can actually be used for, well-deinked pulp can be used for higher-quality paper grades, while less thoroughly processed recycled fibre often gets used for lower-grade applications like packaging paper or paperboard cores, meaning deinking technology investment genuinely affects how much value India's paper industry can extract from its recycled waste paper supply.

This process connects directly to both the waste paper collection gap and the import dependence covered elsewhere on this site, better domestic deinking capacity would let Indian mills extract more usable, higher-quality fibre from whatever waste paper is actually collected domestically, partially offsetting the roughly 7 million tonnes of annual waste paper imports by making better use of the domestic collection India already manages, rather than requiring collection volume growth alone to close that import gap.
