How a generic drug proves it works exactly like the original
Imagine two cups of coffee made from completely different brands of beans, but brewed to deliver the exact same amount of caffeine into your bloodstream at the exact same rate. Even though the ingredients differ, the effect on your body is functionally identical. Bioequivalence is that same idea applied formally to generic medicines.
Bioequivalence testing demonstrates that a generic version of a drug delivers its active ingredient into the bloodstream at essentially the same rate and to the same extent as the original branded drug, even though the generic may use different inactive ingredients or a slightly different manufacturing process. This is the specific scientific standard regulators like the US FDA require before approving a generic drug through the ANDA pathway, since it allows the generic to be considered therapeutically interchangeable with the original without needing to repeat the original's full, far more expensive clinical trial programme.
Bioequivalence is the scientific foundation the entire global generics industry, India's included, is built on, since it is what legally and medically justifies substituting a far cheaper generic for an expensive branded drug without compromising patient outcomes.
