Formulation
The tablet, syrup or injection you actually recognise as medicine
Imagine the difference between a bag of raw flour and an actual finished loaf of bread ready to eat. A formulation is that finished, ready to use form of a medicine, a tablet, capsule, syrup or injection, made by combining the Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient with the various inactive excipients needed to give it a usable, stable, deliverable form.
Formulation is the final, most visible stage of pharmaceutical manufacturing, the point at which a chemical compound genuinely becomes a medicine a patient can take, and it is also generally where the highest brand value and pricing power in the entire pharma value chain sits, compared to earlier stages like API or intermediate manufacturing. Indian pharmaceutical companies broadly fall into two overlapping camps, those focused primarily on formulations sold under their own brand in domestic and export markets, and those focused more heavily upstream on API and CDMO work for global clients.
When a company describes itself as a formulations business rather than a bulk drug or API business, it is signalling that its competitive edge lies in brand, distribution and regulatory filings for the finished product, rather than purely in efficient chemical manufacturing.
