Peptides have existed in medicine for decades, insulin itself is a peptide, but they have become dramatically more commercially significant recently because of GLP-1 drugs, the class behind blockbuster diabetes and weight-loss medicines that have become some of the best-selling drugs in pharmaceutical history within just a few years of widespread adoption.

This sudden surge in global demand has created a genuine manufacturing capacity crunch, since large-scale peptide synthesis is technically demanding and only a limited number of manufacturers worldwide have the specialised equipment and expertise to produce these molecules at the scale global demand now requires. Indian CDMO and API manufacturers, already skilled in complex synthesis, have moved quickly to build peptide manufacturing capability specifically to capture a share of this fast-growing, capacity-constrained market.

Whenever an Indian pharmaceutical or CDMO company announces a major new manufacturing investment specifically for peptide APIs, that decision is almost always a direct response to the GLP-1 drug boom and the genuine global shortage of qualified peptide manufacturing capacity it has created.
