The invisible heartbeat that keeps India's entire power system in sync
Imagine an entire orchestra needing to stay in exact tempo, because if even one section drifts too far out of sync, the whole performance falls apart. India's power grid runs on a similar principle, every generator across the country must stay synchronised to a common electrical frequency, kept close to 50 Hertz.
Grid frequency rises when there is more generation than demand at a given moment, and falls when demand outpaces supply, and large deviations from 50 Hertz for even a short period can damage sensitive equipment or, in a severe case, trigger cascading blackouts across a wide region. Grid operators constantly balance supply and demand in real time specifically to hold frequency within a very tight band around this target.
Grid frequency discipline is exactly what Availability Based Tariff and ancillary services markets are ultimately designed to protect, since a grid running smoothly at a stable 50 Hertz is the invisible foundation everything else in the power sector depends on.
