Round The Clock Power
Solving renewable energy's oldest complaint, that the sun sets
Think of a household that wants uninterrupted electricity but only has a solar panel on the roof, which obviously stops producing the moment the sun goes down. Round The Clock power is the industry's answer to that exact limitation, a supply commitment that guarantees availability across all twenty four hours of the day, not just daylight hours.
Achieving genuine round the clock renewable supply usually requires combining solar and wind generation, since the two tend to peak at different times of day, with battery storage or a firm backup source filling whatever gaps remain. DISCOMs have increasingly started bidding out RTC power contracts specifically, rather than plain solar or wind PPAs, because a guaranteed round the clock supply is far easier to plan a grid around than variable renewable output alone.
RTC power contracts represent one of the clearest signs of India's renewable sector maturing beyond simply adding capacity, toward actually delivering the kind of reliable, always available power that a traditional coal plant has historically been valued for.
