PSLV vs GSLV

India's two workhorse rockets, and why neither one does the other's job

Imagine two different delivery trucks, one a smaller, extremely reliable vehicle perfect for routine local deliveries, and a second, larger, more powerful truck specifically built for the rare, heavier long-haul shipments the smaller truck simply cannot carry. PSLV and GSLV are India's equivalent of these two trucks, each purpose-built for genuinely different orbital delivery jobs.

PSLV, the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle, is India's most reliable and frequently flown rocket, historically used to place satellites into polar and lower Earth orbits, exactly the orbits most Earth observation, remote sensing and many commercial small satellites need. Its long, consistent track record has made it the default choice for a large share of India's own satellite launches and a genuinely competitive option for international customers seeking dependable, cost-effective access to these orbits.

GSLV, the Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle, and its more powerful successor LVM3, exist specifically to reach much higher geostationary orbit, the orbit communication and weather satellites typically need, and to carry heavier payloads than PSLV can manage at all. Reaching geostationary orbit requires substantially more thrust and a more complex flight profile, which is exactly why India needed a genuinely different, more powerful rocket family rather than simply scaling up PSLV further.

This distinction matters commercially because a launch customer's satellite mission profile, what orbit it needs and how heavy the payload is, directly determines which rocket family is even a technical option, PSLV cannot economically or physically substitute for GSLV/LVM3's heavier, higher-orbit capability, and vice versa for lighter, lower-orbit missions where GSLV would be needlessly expensive overkill.

Whenever an Indian launch is reported, checking which specific rocket, PSLV or GSLV/LVM3, is actually flying tells you immediately what kind of mission it is, a routine, lower-orbit satellite deployment on PSLV, or a heavier, more demanding, higher-orbit mission that specifically required GSLV or LVM3's greater lifting power.
