Mobile Number Portability

Imagine wanting to switch mobile operators because a competitor offers better network coverage or pricing, but knowing that switching would mean losing your existing phone number, the same number every contact, bank account and service you've registered has saved for you, a genuine practical barrier that kept many dissatisfied customers locked into their existing operator simply to avoid that disruption. Mobile Number Portability, MNP, introduced in 2011, removed exactly this barrier.

MNP let subscribers switch to a different telecom operator while keeping their existing mobile number entirely unchanged, a technical and regulatory achievement requiring telecom operators to coordinate number routing across their competing networks, genuinely increasing consumer switching power by eliminating the single biggest practical friction that previously discouraged customers from leaving an operator they were unhappy with.

This reform directly intensified competitive pressure across the industry, once customers could switch operators without losing their number, telecom operators had to compete considerably more seriously on actual service quality, network coverage and pricing to retain subscribers, rather than relying partly on the practical inconvenience of switching to keep unhappy customers from leaving.

MNP's competitive pressure connects directly to the 2016 tariff war covered elsewhere on this site, when Jio's aggressive pricing launch disrupted the market, MNP was exactly the mechanism that let millions of dissatisfied customers from other operators actually act on that dissatisfaction and switch quickly, without MNP already in place since 2011, the tariff war's disruptive impact on incumbent operators' subscriber bases would likely have unfolded considerably more slowly.
