Bt Cotton's Quiet Takeover

Imagine a genetically modified seed variety becoming so dominant that within roughly a decade of its introduction, it accounts for the overwhelming majority of an entire country's cultivation of that crop, displacing traditional varieties almost completely, not through mandate, but because farmers themselves found it genuinely more profitable to plant. That's exactly what happened with Bt cotton in India, a genetically engineered variety carrying a gene from the soil bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis that makes the plant naturally resistant to bollworm, one of cotton's most destructive pests.

The adoption curve was genuinely fast, by 2019, Bt cotton accounted for roughly 94% of India's total cotton cultivation, covering nearly 13 million hectares, with adoption rates of at least 80% in every one of India's nine major cotton-growing states, a near-total displacement of conventional cotton varieties within a relatively short window after Bt cotton's commercial introduction.

The appeal to farmers was straightforward economics, built-in bollworm resistance meant significantly reduced pesticide spraying, lower input costs and, in many cases, meaningfully better yields and crop reliability, exactly the kind of direct, visible farm-level benefit that drives fast voluntary adoption in a way top-down agricultural policy mandates rarely achieve on their own.

Bt cotton's dominance is directly relevant to the cotton yield gap covered elsewhere on this site, India's cotton productivity still lags the government's 800-900 kg/hectare target despite near-universal Bt adoption, meaning the yield gap isn't primarily a seed-technology problem anymore, it's increasingly about irrigation, farm practices and other agronomic factors, a genuinely useful distinction for understanding where the next real productivity gains in Indian cotton actually need to come from.
