The Six Technical Textile Segments

Imagine walking into a room and being told 'this is technical textiles', without realising the term actually covers a crop-protection net used on a farm, a geotextile fabric reinforcing a highway embankment, a surgical mask, a car seatbelt and a firefighter's protective suit, five genuinely unrelated products that happen to share one thing in common, none of them are meant to be worn as clothing, each is engineered for a specific technical function instead.

India's National Technical Textiles Mission, covered elsewhere on this site, organises this sprawling category into recognised segments, Agrotech, agricultural and crop-protection textiles, Buildtech, construction reinforcement fabrics, Geotech, soil stabilisation and erosion control textiles used in infrastructure projects, Meditech, medical and hygiene textiles including surgical products, Mobiltech, automotive and transportation textiles like seatbelts and airbags, and Protech, protective textiles for defence, firefighting and industrial safety.

Each of these segments effectively connects to a completely different customer industry covered elsewhere on this site, Geotech textiles feed directly into the Infrastructure industry's road and embankment projects, Mobiltech feeds into the Automobiles industries, Meditech connects to Pharma and healthcare manufacturing, meaning technical textiles isn't really competing with conventional apparel for growth, it's growing alongside whichever of these other industries happens to be expanding fastest.

This segmented structure is exactly why the Technical Textiles Mission's Rs 86,680 crore export target, covered elsewhere on this site, requires genuine capability building across several unrelated manufacturing disciplines simultaneously, a company skilled at weaving agricultural crop-protection netting doesn't automatically know how to manufacture surgical-grade medical textiles, each segment demands its own specific technical expertise even though all six get grouped under one policy umbrella.
