Yarn Count & Fabric GSM
The two numbers that actually tell you how fine a fabric is, once you know how to read them
Imagine picking up two cotton shirts, one noticeably lighter and softer than the other, and wanting a precise, comparable way to describe that difference rather than just saying one 'feels nicer'. The textile industry has exactly two standard measurements for this, yarn count and GSM, grams per square metre, and understanding both turns a vague impression into an actual specification buyers and manufacturers use to communicate precisely.
Yarn count measures how fine or coarse a yarn is, based on the relationship between a fixed length of yarn and its weight, counterintuitively, a higher count number means a finer, thinner yarn, a 40-count yarn is finer than a 20-count yarn, because a longer length of the finer yarn is needed to reach the same reference weight, exactly the opposite of what casual intuition might suggest.
GSM measures a finished fabric's weight, literally how many grams a single square metre of that fabric weighs, a lightweight summer shirting fabric might run around 100-120 GSM, while a heavier denim or upholstery fabric can run 300-400 GSM or more, giving buyers a single, comparable number for fabric weight regardless of the fibre type or weave structure used.
These two measurements together determine most of what a buyer actually cares about when sourcing fabric, yarn count shapes softness and drape, GSM shapes weight and durability, which is exactly why garment export orders, covered elsewhere on this site, specify both precisely, a manufacturer who can't consistently hit a buyer's specified yarn count and GSM tolerance simply won't retain that buyer's repeat business, regardless of price.
