PVC: Polyvinyl Chloride
The plastic behind India's pipes, cables and window frames, and why so much of it is imported
Imagine the plumbing in almost every new Indian building, the electrical cable insulation snaking through its walls, and a good share of its window frames, and there is a strong chance all three are made from the same plastic. Polyvinyl Chloride, or PVC, is one of the most widely used thermoplastics in the world, and construction is its single largest Indian market by far.
PVC is manufactured through a chain that starts with Ethylene Dichloride, or EDC, which is converted into Vinyl Chloride Monomer, or VCM, which is then polymerised into PVC resin. India has meaningful PVC polymerisation capacity, but much of the EDC and VCM feedstock further up that chain is imported, since building the earlier, more capital intensive stages of the chain domestically has lagged the growth in India's actual PVC consumption.
That gap matters because India's construction and infrastructure boom keeps pulling PVC demand higher, for pipes carrying water and sewage, for cables in every new building and grid connection, and for fittings and profiles in everything from doors to furniture, faster than domestic resin capacity has been able to keep pace.
This combination, strong structural demand growth alongside a feedstock import gap, is exactly why PVC capacity expansion shows up repeatedly in the investment plans of India's larger chemical and petrochemical companies, each looking to capture a larger share of a market that is currently still leaking value overseas through imports.
Whenever a pipe manufacturer or a cable company reports margin pressure from resin costs, PVC price movements, themselves driven by global EDC, VCM and crude-linked feedstock costs, are almost always the reason, since so much of the raw material behind India's own PVC still originates well beyond its borders.
