REACH Regulation
The European rulebook that decides whether an Indian chemical exporter can even enter the EU market
Imagine trying to sell food in a country that requires every single ingredient to be tested, documented and pre-approved before a single plate can be served, regardless of how safe that food already seemed at home. REACH is that same demanding gate, applied to chemicals entering the European Union.
REACH, short for Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals, is a European Union regulation administered by the European Chemicals Agency that requires any company manufacturing or importing a chemical substance into the EU above certain volume thresholds to register it, providing detailed safety and environmental data, before it can legally be sold there. Substances of very high concern can additionally require special authorisation, or be restricted or banned outright.
For an Indian chemical exporter, REACH is not a formality, it is a genuine market access gate. Registration is expensive and time-consuming, often requiring extensive toxicological and environmental testing data that a smaller manufacturer may not already possess, and the compliance burden falls disproportionately on companies trying to break into the EU market for the first time rather than established players who registered years ago.
This has a real strategic effect on India's chemical industry. Larger, export-oriented Indian specialty chemical companies increasingly build REACH compliance into their product development process from the start, treating it as a competitive moat, since the cost and complexity of compliance is itself a barrier that keeps smaller, purely domestic-focused competitors out of the lucrative European market.
Whenever an Indian chemical company discusses expanding its European export footprint, REACH registration timelines and costs are typically sitting quietly in the background of that announcement, often determining how quickly, and how profitably, that expansion can actually happen.
