The Lab-Grown Diamond Price Collapse

Imagine a product whose manufacturing cost keeps falling as production technology improves and scale increases, the exact pattern seen in solar panels or computer memory chips over past decades, except applied to something the entire natural diamond industry had spent a century convincing consumers was inherently, permanently scarce and therefore expensive. Lab-grown diamond prices followed exactly this manufacturing-cost-driven collapse, and the scale of it has been genuinely dramatic.

A one-carat lab-grown diamond that wholesaled for roughly $4,200 in 2018 had fallen to as low as $168 by 2025, according to industry tracking, a 96% decline in just seven years, with Bain & Company separately documenting a nearly 40% single-year wholesale price drop in 2023 alone, among the steepest sustained price collapses seen in any manufactured luxury good in recent memory.

For Indian consumers specifically, this has translated into genuinely accessible pricing, a one-carat lab-grown diamond cost between Rs 28,000 and Rs 78,000 in India as of June 2026 depending on quality, putting lab-grown diamonds at roughly 73% to 83% below equivalent natural diamond prices, a gap wide enough that lab-grown has moved from a niche alternative to the default choice for a large and growing share of Indian diamond jewellery buyers.

The pace of decline has genuinely slowed even as the price keeps falling, from roughly 20% annual price drops to under 10% more recently, suggesting the industry may be approaching a production-cost floor rather than continuing an unlimited freefall, the key question for manufacturers now isn't whether prices keep falling, but how much lower that floor genuinely sits before lab-grown diamond economics stabilise into something closer to a mature, predictable manufactured-goods market.
