The LGD-Natural Export Crossover

The month India started exporting more lab-grown diamonds than the real thing, by volume

Imagine an industry that had exported the same product, cut and polished natural diamonds, for over half a century, and then within a single financial year, a lab-created alternative it also happened to be world-leading at producing quietly overtook it in actual volume shipped. That's exactly what happened in India's diamond export data for FY2025-26, polished lab-grown diamond exports reached roughly 18.8 million carats, comfortably ahead of the 16 million carats of polished natural diamonds shipped over the same period.

What makes this crossover genuinely significant rather than a one-off statistical blip is that it held month after month through early 2026, not a single anomalous spike but a sustained structural shift in what India's diamond industry actually ships abroad, confirmed by data from the Association of Intelligent Diamond International and corroborated by trade publications tracking the same underlying export figures.

This crossover happened for reasons covered in depth elsewhere on this site, lab-grown diamond prices collapsed dramatically over the preceding years, making them accessible to a vastly larger consumer base, while natural diamonds simultaneously faced their own separate crisis, US tariffs and Russian sanctions disrupting supply and demand at the same time lab-grown supply was scaling rapidly.

For an industry that built its entire global reputation, and roughly a tenth of Gujarat's Surat district's economy, around cutting and polishing natural stones, watching the lab-grown line overtake the natural one in the same national export data is one of the clearest, most concrete signals available that this transition is now genuinely structural, not a future possibility still being debated.
