Blast Furnace vs Electric Arc Furnace

Imagine two genuinely different industrial processes both capable of producing the exact same finished steel, one burning enormous quantities of coking coal inside a massive blast furnace to chemically strip oxygen from iron ore at extreme temperatures, the traditional Blast Furnace-Basic Oxygen Furnace, BF-BOF, route, the other using powerful electric arcs to simply melt scrap metal or DRI, covered elsewhere on this site, requiring no coal combustion in the steel-making process itself.

The blast furnace route remains the dominant global steel-making method and India's primary large-scale production pathway, genuinely well-suited to enormous, integrated steel plants producing at massive scale, but carrying the coking coal dependence and associated carbon emissions covered elsewhere on this site as an unavoidable feature of the underlying chemistry involved.

Electric arc furnaces offer a genuinely different cost and emissions profile, considerably lower carbon footprint since the process itself doesn't burn fossil fuel directly, though the carbon intensity of the electricity powering the furnace still matters, and greater production flexibility since EAF plants can be built at smaller scale and ramped up or down more easily than the enormous, difficult-to-restart blast furnace complexes.
