The giant battery that lets solar power work after sunset
Imagine filling a water tank during the day when the pump has surplus pressure, then simply opening the tap at night when the pump is switched off. A Battery Energy Storage System does the same for electricity, storing surplus power generated during the day and discharging it later when it is actually needed.
BESS installations are increasingly paired with solar and wind projects specifically to smooth out the natural variability of renewable generation, storing excess output during peak sunlight or wind hours and releasing it during the evening demand peak when solar output has already dropped to zero. This pairing is a core building block behind Round The Clock power contracts, since storage is often what actually makes a renewable project capable of guaranteeing supply outside daylight hours.
Battery costs have fallen sharply over the past decade, and BESS is increasingly showing up as its own separate line item in power project tenders, no longer just an add on to a solar or wind bid but a standalone capacity that DISCOMs and grid operators are now procuring in its own right.
