Gaganyaan: India's Human Spaceflight Programme
Why sending an Indian astronaut into orbit on an Indian rocket has taken years longer than anyone originally promised
Imagine a national programme built around a genuinely singular, high-stakes goal, safely sending an Indian astronaut into orbit aboard an Indian-built rocket and bringing them home alive, a goal only three other countries, the US, Russia and China, have ever achieved independently. Gaganyaan is exactly this programme, and it illustrates something important about human spaceflight specifically, the gap between 'the rocket works' and 'the rocket is safe enough to carry a human being' is enormous, measured in years of additional testing, not months.
ISRO's approach reflects this exact caution, rather than jumping straight to a crewed launch, the programme plans at least three uncrewed test flights, G1, G2 and G3, before the actual human mission, H1, with G1 carrying Vyommitra, a female-featured humanoid robot, standing in for a human crew member to validate every system that would keep a real astronaut alive.
The timeline has slipped repeatedly, originally targeted for far earlier, G1 now aims for late 2026 though ISRO's own leadership has acknowledged it could slip to Q3 2027, with the crewed H1 mission pushed toward 2028 or beyond, delays reflecting exactly the rigorous, safety-first testing philosophy the programme was designed around, three critical qualification tests covering crew module sea-landing safety, re-entry separation mechanisms and parachute deployment structural integrity were completed only in mid-2026.
Four Indian Air Force test pilots, selected in February 2024, Group Captains Prasanth Balakrishnan Nair, Ajit Krishnan, Angad Pratap and Shubhanshu Shukla, remain the designated astronaut candidates, waiting through this extended testing process, a genuine human dimension to a programme where technical caution directly translates into real people's launch dates being repeatedly pushed back, exactly the tradeoff that separates uncrewed satellite launches, covered elsewhere on this site, from the fundamentally higher-stakes challenge of human spaceflight.
