GSAT: India's Communication Satellite Fleet
The invisible infrastructure behind your DTH television, banking network and disaster warning systems
Imagine every direct-to-home television broadcast, a huge share of remote banking network connectivity, and India's cyclone and disaster early-warning systems all quietly depending on the same category of satellite sitting motionless, from Earth's perspective, roughly 36,000 kilometres above the equator. GSAT satellites are exactly this communication infrastructure, India's dedicated fleet of geosynchronous satellites relaying television, telecommunications and data signals across the country.
These satellites occupy the geosynchronous orbit covered elsewhere on this site specifically because that fixed position relative to Earth's surface is what makes reliable, continuous broadcast and communication service possible, a ground-based satellite dish, once pointed at a specific GSAT satellite's position, never needs to be readjusted, since the satellite never appears to move from that fixed point in the sky.
GSAT satellites carry transponders, covered under Transponder Leasing elsewhere on this site, the actual signal relay equipment that broadcasters, telecom companies and other users lease capacity on, meaning a single GSAT satellite typically serves many different commercial and government customers simultaneously, each leasing a slice of the satellite's total communication capacity rather than any single user owning the entire satellite's output.
The strategic importance of this fleet became especially visible during natural disasters, when terrestrial communication infrastructure, cell towers, fibre networks, can be damaged or overwhelmed, GSAT-based communication and disaster warning systems continue functioning independently of ground infrastructure, exactly the kind of resilience that makes satellite communication capacity a genuine national security and disaster-response asset, not just a commercial broadcast tool.
