Why the sky above us is quietly filling up with junk travelling fast enough to destroy a satellite on impact
Imagine millions of fragments, defunct satellites, spent rocket stages, and debris from past collisions and anti-satellite tests, covered elsewhere on this site, all orbiting Earth at speeds around 28,000 kilometres per hour, fast enough that even a fragment the size of a coin carries enough kinetic energy to seriously damage or destroy an operational satellite on impact. Space debris represents a genuinely growing, largely invisible hazard to every country's satellite infrastructure, India's included.
This threat matters directly to every industry covered on this site that depends on satellite infrastructure, communication satellites, covered under Telecom elsewhere on this site, GPS and NavIC navigation, covered elsewhere on this site, and earth observation satellites supporting agriculture and defence, all share the same orbital environment as this growing debris population, a collision with even a small fragment could disable a satellite worth hundreds of crores overnight.
Space Situational Awareness, SSA, is the discipline built specifically to track this debris and predict potential collisions before they happen, using ground-based radar and telescopes to catalogue and monitor thousands of tracked objects, giving satellite operators, including ISRO, the warning needed to perform evasive manoeuvres when a collision risk is genuinely predicted.
India has been actively building its own SSA capability rather than relying entirely on other countries' tracking data, a genuine strategic necessity given how much of India's own space infrastructure, communication, navigation, defence, now depends on satellites that need active protection from this growing debris population, exactly the kind of unglamorous but genuinely essential infrastructure investment that has to scale alongside India's own growing satellite constellation to keep that constellation actually safe and operational.
