Bharat 6G Vision
Why India started planning the technology after next before most of the world had even finished rolling out 5G
Imagine a country that spent decades primarily adopting mobile network technology standards developed elsewhere, 2G, 3G, 4G and even much of 5G's core technology originating from research and standards bodies in other countries, and deciding that for the next generation, 6G, it wants to be a genuine contributor to the underlying technology and global standards, not simply a market that eventually adopts whatever gets developed abroad. The Bharat 6G Vision, released in March 2023, represents exactly this ambition.
Starting this early matters genuinely strategically, global telecom standards get set years before commercial rollout actually happens, meaning a country that only starts engaging once 6G standards are already largely finalised elsewhere has essentially no influence over decisions, spectrum allocation approaches, technical architecture choices, that will shape the technology for a decade or more, exactly why India began building its 6G research and standards engagement well ahead of expected commercial deployment.
India has pursued this through genuine international collaboration rather than purely domestic research, the Bharat 6G alliance has explored partnership with European telecom industry bodies specifically to shape 6G development jointly, reflecting recognition that no single country, even one with India's scale, can single-handedly drive a global technology standard without meaningful international coordination.
This 6G ambition connects directly to the broader shift covered under Semiconductors and IT Hardware elsewhere on this site, India's telecom equipment manufacturing push, aiming to build domestic capability in designing and manufacturing the actual network hardware, not just consuming imported equipment, gains considerably more strategic weight if India also holds genuine influence over the underlying 6G technical standards those domestically-manufactured components will eventually need to support.
