BharatNet: Connecting Rural India
The multi-decade fibre optic project trying to bring broadband to every village panchayat in the country
Imagine trying to physically lay fibre optic cable connecting broadband internet to every single village-level government administrative unit across an enormous, geographically diverse country, spanning mountains, deserts, dense forests and remote islands, a genuinely massive infrastructure undertaking that private telecom operators alone would never find commercially attractive to build on their own. BharatNet exists specifically as the government's answer to exactly this rural connectivity gap.
The scale of physical infrastructure actually laid is genuinely enormous, 6,92,676 kilometres of optical fibre cable as of January 2025, connecting 2.15 lakh Gram Panchayats, village-level local government bodies, to broadband internet, part of a broader national fibre network that more than doubled from 19.35 lakh route kilometres in 2019 to 42.36 lakh kilometres by 2025.
This fibre backbone serves a genuinely dual purpose beyond direct rural household connectivity, telecom operators are actively encouraged to use BharatNet's existing fibre infrastructure to connect their own mobile towers and base stations, covered elsewhere on this site, rather than each operator independently building duplicate fibre backhaul networks, a genuinely efficient shared-infrastructure model that reduces the total capital private operators need to invest in extending network coverage into rural areas.
