The law that quietly rewrote what an Indian drone is allowed to do
Imagine an old rulebook so restrictive and so paper heavy that most people simply avoided the activity altogether rather than deal with it, and then imagine that entire rulebook being torn up and replaced with a lighter, mostly digital version overnight. That is roughly what happened to Indian drone regulation in 2021.
The Drone Rules of 2021 replaced an earlier, considerably stricter framework, cutting the number of separate forms and approvals required, removing several categories of prior permission for lower risk drone categories, and shifting almost the entire registration and clearance process onto the online Digital Sky platform. The rules also introduced a simplified airspace map, colour coding zones as green, yellow or red based on how freely drones can operate there, giving operators much greater clarity on where flight is permitted without needing individual case by case approval.
This single regulatory reset is widely credited with unlocking the rapid growth of India's commercial drone industry over the following years, since much of what had previously been a compliance nightmare simply became a straightforward online registration process.
