Logistics Performance Index

Imagine a report card that grades every country on exactly how efficiently goods actually move through it, customs clearance speed, infrastructure quality, ease of arranging competitively priced shipments, tracking and tracing capability, and on-time delivery reliability, all rolled into a single comparable score. The World Bank's Logistics Performance Index, LPI, does exactly this, ranking around 139 countries every few years on precisely these dimensions.

India's LPI trajectory tells a genuinely consistent improvement story, climbing from 54th place in 2014 to 38th in the 2023 edition, with a particularly strong 22nd place ranking specifically in the International Shipments category, a sixteen-place overall climb across roughly a decade that reflects sustained, deliberate policy investment rather than a one-off improvement.

The government has set an explicit target of reaching the top 25 by 2030, and every LPI update from here functions as a real checkpoint on that goal, if India's rank keeps climbing at a similar pace, the reforms are translating into genuine on-the-ground efficiency gains, if progress stalls, that's a signal worth investigating regardless of how confident the policy announcements sound.
