Suppose a government looked at global demand projections for a metal used in everything from electric vehicle bodies to power transmission lines to packaging, and concluded the country's current production simply wasn't going to be enough for where the world, and the domestic economy, were both headed. India's Aluminium Vision Document does exactly this, laying out a roadmap to scale up domestic aluminium production six-fold by 2047, India's centenary of independence.

That kind of production scale-up doesn't happen without a matching increase further up the value chain, aluminium is smelted from alumina, which is refined from bauxite ore, so the Vision Document also targets expanding India's bauxite mining capacity to 150 million tonnes per year, a raw-material target that has to be hit well before the smelting targets built on top of it can realistically be met.

Private industry has already begun moving on this scale-up, Hindalco Industries announced a Rs 21,000 crore, roughly $2.3 billion, aluminium smelter expansion and new downstream facilities in Odisha, exactly the kind of capital commitment the Vision Document's long-term target depends on materialising from India's existing major producers rather than from new entrants alone.

This aluminium story connects directly to the electric vehicle transition covered elsewhere on this site, EVs use meaningfully more aluminium per vehicle than conventional cars, for lighter body panels and battery enclosures, meaning aluminium demand isn't just growing with the general economy, it's growing faster than the economy specifically because of the automotive industry's own powertrain shift.
