Copper Vision Document
Why India is racing to build copper smelting capacity before the clean-energy and EV boom multiplies demand six-fold
Imagine every electric vehicle, solar panel, wind turbine and data centre the world plans to build over the next two decades, and the sheer quantity of copper wiring each one requires, copper being the metal that actually carries electricity through nearly all of this infrastructure. India's Copper Vision Document was built around exactly this projection, anticipating domestic copper demand will grow roughly six-fold by 2047 as the clean energy and electrification transitions accelerate.
To meet demand growth at that scale, the Vision Document sets a considerably nearer-term target too, adding 5 million tonnes per annum of copper smelting and refining capacity by 2030, a target that requires real capital investment starting now, not in the 2040s, precisely because building smelting capacity takes years and the demand curve doesn't wait.
This is also why copper's 2025 classification as a critical mineral matters so directly, it places copper within the same MMDR Amendment Act framework covered elsewhere on this site, opening its exploration and mining to the private and foreign capital the Vision Document's ambitious targets will require, rather than leaving copper supply dependent on existing state-linked mining capacity alone.
The clearest way to track whether this Vision Document is working is to watch India's copper import dependence over the coming years, if domestic smelting and refining capacity genuinely scales toward the 2030 target, India's reliance on imported refined copper should visibly shrink, if it doesn't, that gap between the target and actual capacity built is the story worth following.
