DRDO: Defence Research and Development Organisation
The agency that invents what India's defence industry then has to actually build
Imagine a national research lab whose entire purpose is not to sell a single product itself, but to invent the underlying technology and then hand the finished blueprint to factories, public and private, to actually manufacture at scale. That is the Defence Research and Development Organisation, DRDO, India's primary defence research and development agency, established in 1958.
DRDO does not itself manufacture weapons systems for the armed forces at scale. Its job is research, design and prototype development, missiles, radar systems, electronic warfare equipment and countless other defence technologies, which it then transfers, through formal technology transfer agreements, to defence public sector undertakings and, increasingly, private Indian manufacturers for actual production.
This division of labour means DRDO's success is measured less by units produced and more by how much of India's defence technology base did not have to be imported because DRDO developed a workable domestic alternative. Missile programmes and indigenous radar and electronic warfare systems are among its most visible achievements, though the organisation has also faced sustained criticism over the decades for projects that ran years or decades behind schedule.
In recent years, DRDO's role has expanded to include actively funding and mentoring private industry and academic research through mechanisms like the Technology Development Fund, deliberately building a wider ecosystem of innovation rather than keeping all research concentrated inside DRDO's own laboratories, partly in response to long-standing criticism that a single centralised agency struggled to keep pace with faster-moving private and global innovation.
Whenever a new indigenous missile, radar or electronic warfare system is inducted into Indian service, DRDO is almost always the origin of the underlying technology, even when the actual manufacturing was carried out by a defence PSU or a private strategic partner under licence.
