IDDM

Imagine a government tender that explicitly ranks bids not just on price and quality, but also on how much of the product was actually designed and built domestically, giving the highest preference to something conceived entirely at home rather than simply assembled locally from imported parts. IDDM, Indigenously Designed, Developed and Manufactured, is exactly that highest preference category in Indian defence procurement.

To qualify as IDDM, defence equipment must be both designed and developed domestically, and manufactured in India with a minimum specified level of indigenous content, a meaningfully higher bar than categories that only require local assembly or manufacture of an externally designed product. India's Defence Acquisition Procedure explicitly places IDDM at the top of its procurement preference order, meaning a genuinely homegrown design gets first consideration ahead of options that are merely built in India under foreign design.

IDDM status has become a genuine competitive advantage for Indian defence companies and startups that can demonstrate real domestic design capability, rather than simply local manufacturing capacity, reinforcing the broader Atmanirbhar Bharat push toward reducing India's historical dependence on imported defence technology.
