EDA: Electronic Design Automation
The specialised software without which no modern chip could be designed
Imagine trying to design a building with billions of interconnected rooms, wires and pipes using only pen and paper. It would be physically impossible for a human mind to manage that complexity manually. EDA software is what makes designing a modern chip, with billions of transistors, humanly possible at all.
Electronic Design Automation refers to the specialised software tools chip designers use to design, simulate and verify a semiconductor's circuit layout before it is ever sent for fabrication, catching errors and optimising performance entirely in a virtual environment first. The EDA software market itself is dominated globally by a small handful of specialised companies, making access to cutting edge EDA tools almost as strategically important to a country's chip ambitions as access to fabrication equipment itself.
Every chip design incentive scheme, including India's DLI programme, implicitly depends on designers having access to world class EDA tools, which is why building a domestic design ecosystem is not just about training engineers, but also about ensuring they have the right software infrastructure to actually do the work.
