Testing

The quality check that catches a defective chip before it reaches a customer

Imagine a factory producing thousands of identical looking components, where even a tiny fraction with a hidden defect could cause a phone, a car or an aircraft system to malfunction later. Testing exists to catch exactly those defective units before they ever leave the factory.

In semiconductor manufacturing, testing happens at multiple stages, checking individual dies while still on the wafer, and again after final packaging, using automated equipment that runs each chip through a battery of electrical checks to confirm it performs correctly before it is approved for shipment. Given how deeply embedded chips are in critical systems, from medical devices to automotive safety systems, testing standards in this industry are unusually rigorous compared to most other manufacturing sectors.

Testing is one of the four core activities bundled into the acronym ATMP, alongside assembly, marking and packaging, and it is exactly the kind of quality assurance work that gives global customers the confidence to source chips from a newer manufacturing base like India's emerging OSAT facilities.
