How India became the first country ever to land near the Moon's genuinely unexplored south pole
Imagine two previous attempts to land a spacecraft softly on the Moon both ending in failure, the kind of setback that could easily justify abandoning the goal entirely, and instead using those failures as direct engineering lessons for a third, ultimately successful attempt. That's genuinely Chandrayaan-3's story, ISRO's third lunar mission, building directly on lessons from Chandrayaan-2's 2019 landing failure to achieve what Chandrayaan-1 and -2 together couldn't, a fully successful soft landing.
The August 23, 2023 landing achieved something no other country had ever accomplished, touching down at a site named Shiv Shakti Point, roughly 600 kilometres from the Moon's south pole, a region scientifically significant specifically because permanently shadowed craters near the lunar poles are believed to harbour water ice, a resource genuinely important for any future sustained lunar exploration or habitation.
This landing made India only the fourth country ever to achieve a soft lunar landing, after the US, Soviet Union and China, and the first country of any kind to successfully land specifically in the south polar region, a genuine technical achievement other space agencies, including better-funded ones, had not yet accomplished, reflecting exactly the kind of engineering capability India's space programme has built up over decades of the incremental mission progression covered elsewhere on this site.
