Why India parked a spacecraft 1.5 million kilometres away just to get an uninterrupted view of the Sun
Imagine wanting to study the Sun continuously, without the Earth, Moon or the spacecraft's own orbital position ever blocking the view, a genuinely difficult positioning problem for any satellite orbiting Earth directly, since it would inevitably pass into Earth's shadow periodically. Aditya-L1, India's first dedicated solar observatory mission, solves this by parking not in Earth orbit at all, but at a special gravitational balance point called Lagrange Point 1, roughly 1.5 million kilometres from Earth directly toward the Sun.
Lagrange Point 1 exists because at that specific distance, the gravitational pull of the Sun and Earth balance out in a way that lets a spacecraft maintain a stable position relative to both, without needing constant fuel-consuming corrections, meaning a spacecraft parked there can maintain a genuinely continuous, uninterrupted view of the Sun indefinitely, exactly the observation capability solar research requires.
Launched September 2, 2023 aboard a PSLV rocket, covered elsewhere on this site, and reaching its final halo orbit around L1 by January 6, 2024, Aditya-L1 carries seven distinct scientific instruments, four for remote sensing observation and three for direct, on-site measurement of the solar wind and particles actually reaching the spacecraft's location, giving scientists both a telescopic view of the Sun and direct physical samples of what it's actually emitting.
