Mission Shakti: India's Anti-Satellite Test
The 2019 test that made India the fourth country capable of shooting down its own satellite from the ground
Imagine a country demonstrating it can launch a missile from the ground and precisely destroy one of its own satellites in low Earth orbit, a genuinely difficult technical feat requiring extreme precision tracking and interception capability, and doing so specifically to signal that its space assets, and its ability to threaten an adversary's space assets, are defensible, not purely peaceful infrastructure vulnerable without recourse. Mission Shakti, India's anti-satellite, ASAT, missile test conducted on March 27, 2019, achieved exactly this.
The test made India only the fourth country to demonstrate this specific capability, after the United States, Russia and China, joining an genuinely small, strategically significant group of nations capable of directly threatening satellites in orbit, a capability with real deterrent value precisely because modern militaries, and modern economies more broadly, increasingly depend on satellite infrastructure for navigation, communication and surveillance.
India specifically targeted the test at a low altitude, deliberately chosen to minimise the amount of long-lived space debris the destroyed satellite would generate, a genuine, internationally scrutinised concern given how anti-satellite tests by other countries have historically created debris fields that persist and threaten other satellites, including the testing country's own, for years afterward.
