Imagine a hawk circling patiently above a field, watching and waiting, before diving down decisively the moment it spots its target, rather than simply flying in a straight line toward a fixed point it was aimed at from the start. A loitering munition behaves in a strikingly similar way on the battlefield.
A loitering munition is a weapon system that flies over a target area for an extended period, waiting and often being remotely observed, before being deliberately deployed to strike a target once identified, effectively combining the surveillance capability of a drone with the destructive payload of a missile. This makes it distinct from both a conventional drone, which typically carries no warhead, and a conventional missile, which is fired directly at a pre-determined target without any loitering or observation phase.
Loitering munitions have become an increasingly prominent category in modern defence procurement globally, and Indian defence planners have shown growing interest in developing and acquiring this capability, reflecting how conflicts elsewhere have demonstrated just how effective and comparatively low cost this weapon category can be against far more expensive conventional armoured targets.
