Remote Pilot Certificate

The licence that turns a hobbyist into a legally authorised drone operator

Defence·beginner·1 min read·Updated July 2026

Think of the difference between someone who has simply driven a car informally and someone who holds an actual driving licence after passing a proper test. A Remote Pilot Certificate is that same formal licence, specifically for operating a drone above a certain weight category or for certain commercial operations in India.

The RPC is issued after an individual completes the required training and passes an assessment, and it becomes mandatory for operating larger drones or drones used in commercial applications, including virtually all BVLOS flights, where the higher operational risk demands a demonstrably trained pilot rather than an untrained hobbyist. Smaller, lower risk drone categories are exempted from this requirement under the lighter 2021 rules, keeping casual, low risk drone use genuinely simple.

The RPC is the individual level equivalent of type certification at the aircraft level, together they form the two pillars of India's risk based drone regulation, a certified pilot flying a certified drone being the baseline requirement for any serious commercial drone operation in the country.
